Friends … That famous American television sitcom, which aired from 1994 to 2004. It attracted millions & millions of fans from all over the planet. Although many other sitcoms were produced afterwards, I believe none of them could catch the same success that Friends achieved.
There is a notice here that different generations enjoy the show. Even those who were born in the end of 90s and later, and did not attend the comedy series premiere, they are still fans as well!
Why? … There can be many reasons. Here, I am trying to list the ones from my perspective …
Friends & Family
The story presents six friends living next to each other, and we see two adjacent apartments with doors are always unlocked. So, they move freely from one apartment to another. In the morning, they can meet for the breakfast. Then, they move into separate paths for their daily jobs. In the evening, they gather again in Monica’s apartment (enjoying Monica’s food) or in Central Perk café. They share stories and updates. In weekends, they have the time to gather, talk, play, and even travel.
In brief, they are like friends and a family.
The idea of living next to friends is appealing to many, even from different generations.
I’ll be there for you
We see a perfect support system. Whenever any of them face a failed relation, a lost job, a shortage in money, or a casual health issue, we see the whole group provides help and support.
On the other hand, when there is a happy event for one of them, he/she finds good friends to celebrate with. In general occasions such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, it is enjoyable to spend the time with your friends ….
Generally, we saw good friends who were together in good times & bad time… and that song in the intro “I will be there for you” was good choice.
We liked the places of Friends
The decoration has its effect too … Most of the scenes, the friends were gathering in one of two locations: Monica’s apartment and Central Perk … and we liked them both.
For Monica’s apartment, we loved all the details … the kitchen that is full of items organized in blue shelves, the round table next t the fridge, the comfortable couch in the center, the big window, the terrace what has no doors and they were entering it through window, and the apartment door with the famous frame on it.
We really loved all of these details. We even have floor plan drawings for the Monica’s apartment and the adjacent (for Joey and Chandler).
For Central Perk, We remember this big orange couch right in the center of the café. The corner where Phoebe used to sing, and the Glass façade in behind, with café logo printed on it. Due to the big success of Friends, we currently see central Perk Cafes in real life, with decoration inspired from the series.
We liked the characters … All the six friends: Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), and Ross Geller (David Schwimmer).
Why did we like them? …not sure … Maybe they represent us. We see friends from middle class, living in the city, and struggling in life… Well I assume this applies to majority of planet population.
Also, we saw normal people where each of them has positive and negative sides in his/her personality, just like all of us.
Maybe because they are good looking? … a valid reason too.
Maybe because we saw many other stars appearing as guests in different episodes… George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and many others have appeared in Friends episodes.
A Comedy Show
Did we mention that it was a comedy show?
Well … It really is … This well written series extracted our laughs and smiles. Friends episodes never failed to put us in a better mood … whenever needed, we just open a random episode, and Voila! … within few moments, we get into the show, and the happiness dose starts its effect.
Generally, I assume that these are not the only reasons … each of us may have a different list … you too may have your own reasons for why we love Friends.
